Naturally, now that a new season has arrived, we’re curious about the most talked-about Winter Makeup Trends 2023. Changing up our makeup formulas for the season (read: freezing cold-weather calls for hydrating formulas) and giving our makeup bags a new lease on life is what happens when we transition from autumn makeup to winter makeup.
Historically, we’ve been able to see new cosmetics tendencies on the runways a season or two before they hit drugstore shelves. However, there are numerous sources that can now influence the daily makeup choices we make.
TikTok is undeniably influential because it serves as a breeding ground for innovative styles and practices. Then there is the knowledge of celebrity makeup artists who know what kinds of cosmetics will be popular before it even becomes a trend.
And of course, when we’re scrolling through our social media feeds, we always have one eye on what our favorite celebrities and influencers are wearing. In addition, the makeup industry is influenced by the kinds of beauty products that consumers like us buy.
Bearing these in mind, I dove headfirst into the Winter Makeup Trends that will set the tone for the season, complete with plenty of inspo pictures and recommendations for recreating the looks.
1) Brow Bleaching is One of the Most Popular Winter Makeup Trends.
After seeing Gigi and Bella Hadid’s bleached brows on the runways, a slew of celebrities and TikTokers experimented with the trend, either by bleaching their own hair or by covering up their natural brows with concealer. Sallis is a huge fan of the makeup trend, despite its potentially unsettling appearance in real life.
She explains that bleaching “gives the face a softer, more ‘open’ appearance,” making it easier to try out new, daring high-fashion makeup looks. To make the blush appear higher and more pronounced, try blending it onto the temple while drawing the pigment toward the brow bone. For a stunning editorial effect, you can also blend your eyeshadow into your brow’s light hair. Maybe we have a shot here!
2) My Favorite Winter Makeup Trends Are From the Nineties Grunge Scene
After a brief foray into ’90s-inspired Y2K makeup, retro looks are making a comeback. In a surprising departure from the no-makeup makeup trend, thick black eyeliner was a common sight on the runways at Fashion Week this season. To try this, you’ll need some supplies in addition to a good black eyeliner, such as the PAT MCGRATH LABS Eyeliner in PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in XTreme Black.
Salliss claims that multiple thin layers are the key to the grunge look. Instead of starting with a black eyeshadow, “layer a deep brown shadow underneath,” she suggests. “It not only gives it a smoky, diffused finish but also makes the black look softer and more unified.” To achieve the ultimate grunge look, she recommends selecting products in earthy tones of brown, red, and black.
3) Dark Under-Eye Liner is One of the Most Classy Winter Makeup Trends.
Substantial under-eye eyeliner is another rising grunge fashion. People are shifting away from the traditional cat-eye in favor of a wider variety of lower eyeliner looks, such as a smoky color along the lash line or black liner on the waterline. “This is a simple method to achieve a grungy look or even incorporate a funky color without the commitment of having it all over your eyelids,” Salliss says. Cut a strip lash into pieces and glue them individually to your lower lash line for a Twiggy effect, in my opinion.
4) Smokey Siren Eyes is the Most Common Winter Makeup Trend:
With good reason, siren eyes have exploded in popularity on the video-sharing platform TikTok. This updated version of the cat-eye complements any set of eyes. Makeup artist Salliss claims the look can be achieved with nothing more than thick, smudged eyeliner.
A siren’s eyes can be achieved by applying dark eyeshadow with an angle brush, not a pencil, as she puts it. As a result, you can adjust the volume, add more drama, or lessen the intensity as desired. Use the DIOR 5 Couleurs Couture eyeshadow palette in 359 Cosmic Eyes, which features both dark and light shades, to achieve a dramatic siren eye with bright inner corners in a snap.
5) Always in Style for Winter With Brick Red Lips
In place of summer’s vibrant corals and pastels, red lipstick is the ideal winter beauty accessory. For the winter, Salliss favors a brick-red lip color. She recommends experimenting with rusty or muted red lipsticks rather than the traditional blue-undertoned reds. Someone who is new to wearing red lips should try brick-colored red lipstick because of how gentle and subdued it is.
Final Thoughts!
Just like every other season, the makeup industry is jumping on the bandwagon of the latest and greatest cosmetics fads this one. The runways for Fall/Winter 2023-2024 presented a wide variety of looks to complement any personality.
